SUBJECT: PS41 PTA Bulletin - Week of 10/10

PS41 Families!

We hope you enjoyed the long weekend -- whether filled with the rush of running from one sporting event to the next, leaf-peeping outside of the City, those long overdue closet clean outs, exploring our urban oasis, or just hiding out in pajamas and relaxing. As we all know, long weekends make for short but busy weeks. We kicked off the Costume Drive (our bins are overflowing!), tonight is the Fall Fling (we hope to see you there!), and Middle School Tours are in full swing (yay Class of '23!)!

As we've looked back on all of the events we've already hosted in the few short weeks since school began, and look ahead to all we have planned, here's a reminder that none of these events would be possible without our incredible families. Our children count on both your gifts of resources and your gifts of time to help fill their days with enriching opportunities, exciting events, and meaningful initiatives.

We have some terrific parents who have hit the ground running, and have shown up in numerous and impactful ways. Adding to our returning roster of incredible volunteers — for that we are so grateful. A special Thank You to Daphne Shirley, Melissa Verner, and Rebecca Lupardo for heading up the Costume Drive and making it festive and successful. And to Mercedita Monserrate and Beth Simon for organizing tonight's Fall Fling (amongst all the many other welcome events so far this year).

To continue to bring back and introduce new in-person programming, we need all of you to be raising your hands, rolling up your sleeves, and diving in when and where you can -- so take our PTA challenge and pledge your time for at least two events this year! We look forward to collaborating to bring all of your visions to life!

Sincerely,

Sara Tranter & Melissa Valdes, PS41 PTA Co-Presidents (pta@ps41.org)

Costume Drive -- through Friday @ Dropoff

Back by popular demand, our Halloween Costume Drive will run from October 11th through 14th. Our neighboring elementary schools were so very grateful last year for the amazing options that came their way, and we're excited for our community to come together to deliver to them again this year.

See Halloween Drive Flyer for more details or email 41Cares@ps41.org with any questions or to join their distribution list.

Monster Mash -- 10/29

Save the date for the return of our beloved Monster Mash -- Saturday October 29th. In order to manage the crowds and adjust the the spookiness, we are offering two sessions:

  • Session 1: noon-2pm; 3K through 2nd Grade
  • Session 2: 3-5pm;  3rd through 5th Grade

What is Monster Mash? A Halloween celebration for current PS41 students. The first two floors of the school will be filled with arts and crafts, gaga pits, a green screen, a mad science experience, a chill out space, glam squad, music, a scavenger hunt, food tables (baked goods and pizza with gluten and nut free options available), a realistic Haunted House, and photo booth and souvenirs for purchase. Come in costume!

How can you participate? Our community has a great appetite for in-person events and we are thrilled to be able to bring many of them back. In order for a large scale event like Monster Mash to succeed, we need many volunteers to help pull off every aspects of this extravaganza. There is a comprehensive list of options for you to do your part - signup HERE! Quick highlights: we need people to help construct the haunted house, bake or buy for the food tables, staff the event (2.25 hour shifts), set up or break down the entire event. There is something for everyone. Please be sure to snag a spot!

Where do I purchase tickets? Tickets are $25 per student; Monster Money is $10 (towards food purchases). Tickets will be on sale (1) online at this link through Thursday October 28th, (2) in person on Wednesday October 26th at dropoff and dismissal, Thursday October 27th at dropoff and dismissal, and Friday October 29th at dropoff only; and (3) at the door on the day of the event.

We ensure that PS41 events are accessible to all students; please reach out to Thom Lee for support.

Any questions? email MonsterMash@ps41.org.

Art & Poetry Calendar 2023 -- Due 10/21

Calling all PS41 artists and poets...! As one of our annual beloved fundraisers, the PTA designs and sells a calendar of students' art and poetry. This year we invite our students to inspire us all year long with their visions of "365 Days of Wonder." Your children are free to interpret the theme however they wish and should let the creativity flow! Prompts could include: How do you envision possibilities for a future world?; What are your hopes and dreams?; What do you wonder about? -- there are no boundaries, so let your child's imagination run wild.

Your kiddos can show and/or tell us what it means to them by submitting artwork, poetry or a combination of the two. All two-dimensional forms are acceptable, including but not limited to collage, watercolor, photography, drawings, acrylic and oil paintings, but may not exceed 8.5"x11" in size. Art teacher Ms. Toni Ann will be reviewing all entries and selecting approximately 40 pieces to be published in the 2023 calendar.

In order to have our calendars delivered in time for the holidays, submissions are due October 21st by 3pm. Students can submit original artwork to the PTA office (Room 101) or deliver to their classroom teachers. See the A&P Flyer for additional details and email PTA@ps41.org with any questions.

Family Giving

Thanks to those of you who have already donated. We're slowly climbing to our goal.  We're looking for everyone to participate at any level. Please take the time to Donate Online now.

Why does the PTA need to raise funds?

NYC’s DOE Budget does not cover 100% of the school’s operating budget. Through contributions from our families, the PTA raises and funds the portion of the budget that helps set our school apart from others. And we need your help, now more than ever, to ensure we rebuild the breadth of enrichment programs, activities, resources and equipment that creates for our kids the magical experience of our National Blue Ribbon Award winning school. For more information see our Family Giving Flyer.

Our total PTA budget of $552,000 is based on projected expenditures for the aggregate of our 500 students. Each year, our Family Giving Campaign strives to raise at least half of that amount through a direct campaign. Every dollar counts. Please Donate Online.

Look for Family Giving volunteers on Friday at drop off to answer any questions or email FamilyGiving@ps41.org.

Stay Informed

Sometimes you just don't know where to go to get the information you need.  Here is a Cheat Sheet to help steer you in the right direction. Here's a PDF of our PS41 2022-23 Family Handbook, which can also be found on our Website (ps41.org) in the "About Our School" section.

Community Engagement

Our Community Education Council for District 2 (CECD2), created by the New York State Legislature, is the local body responsible for ensuring that we, as the parents, and the public have input in educational decision-making at our community school district level. If you are interested in learning more about, and/or getting involved in, the education landscape in NYC:

Community Board 2 has an important advisory role in land use and zoning, landmarks, quality of life, City budget, municipal service delivery, etc. If you are interested in learning more about, and/or getting involved in, the many issues affecting our local community’s welfare:
