SUBJECT: PS41 PTA Bulletin - Week of 10/3

PS41 Families!

We hope you're staying warm and dry; it seems that fall has swiftly knocked summer into the rearview, so we are grateful to all who contributed outerwear in time for us to deliver to students in need.

By now your Class Parents should have sent their first communication, together with a class directory. If you have not received anything, please first check your Spam folder and then contact ClassParents@ps41.org.

It's no surprise that as soon as the calendar page flips over to October, kids (and many parents alike) begin to get pumped up for Halloween. Here at PS41 we were too eager to wait, and  we have already been ramping up for the "resurrection" of Monster Mash on Saturday 10/29/22! Join the Haunted House kickoff meeting in the Cafeteria this Thursday 10/6/22 at 7:30pm to learn about and, hopefully, join the team who puts the "OOOOOOOOOO" into SPOOKY! And start gathering costumes from All Hallow Eve's past...the costume drive will run from next Tuesday 10/11/22 through Friday 10/14/22 at dropoff.

Don't forget, school is closed tomorrow 10/5/22 and Monday 10/10/22. It's a perfect time to have your kiddos get creative and work on their Art & Poetry calendar submissions!

Sincerely,

Sara Tranter & Melissa Valdes, PS41 PTA Co-Presidents (pta@ps41.org)

Get Involved

There are so many ways to Get Involved at PS41. Don't miss out on these upcoming opportunities:

Haunted House Kickoff -- 10/6 @ 7:30p

Do you have creative inclinations, artistic talents, construction skills, or just love to bring the spook? Join one of the most fun parent teams at PS41 - the Haunted House crew. Thanks to the leadership and creativity of parent David Glover, our parent volunteers come together to envision and construct a life size marvel in the PS41 auditorium during Monster Mash.

There will be an adults only informational meeting on Thursday 10/6/22 at 7:30pm in the PS41 cafeteria. We are looking for creative minds, art/sculpture specialists, carpenters/building team, decorators and coordinators to pull it all together, on Friday 10/28/22, in the (SPOOOOOOKY) hours leading up to the Monster Mash. Check out pictures from previous years below.

Any questions? email monstermash@ps41.org

Come in costume!

Save the date for Saturday, October 29. We have 2 shifts in order to manage the crowds and adjust the the spook.

Session 1: noon-2pm; 3K-2nd grade

Session 2: 3-5pm;  3rd- 5th grade

Monster Mash is open to all current PS41 students. Tickets are $25 per student; $10 for Monster Money if you want to make purchasing food easier.  Tickets will go on sale in a few weeks. We will also have sign ups for donations of baked (or bought) goods and parent volunteers to staff the party. We want to make sure that PS41 events are accessible to all students. Please reach out to Thom Lee for support.

Art & Poetry Calendar 2023 -- Due 10/21

Calling all PS41 artists and poets...! As one of our annual beloved fundraisers, the PTA designs and sells a calendar of students' art and poetry. This year we invite our students to inspire us all year long with their visions of "365 Days of Wonder." Your children are free to interpret the theme however they wish and should let the creativity flow! Prompts could include: How do you envision possibilities for a future world?; What are your hopes and dreams?; What do you wonder about? -- there are no boundaries, so let your child's imagination run wild.

Your kiddos can show and/or tell us what it means to them by submitting artwork, poetry or a combination of the two. All two-dimensional forms are acceptable, including but not limited to collage, watercolor, photography, drawings, acrylic and oil paintings, but may not exceed 8.5"x11" in size. Art teacher Ms. Toni Ann will be reviewing all entries and selecting approximately 40 pieces to be published in the 2023 calendar.

In order to have our calendars delivered in time for the holidays, submissions are due October 21st by 3pm. Students can submit original artwork to the PTA office (Room 101) or deliver to their classroom teachers. See the A&P Flyer for additional details and email PTA@ps41.org with any questions.

Costume Drive -- 10/11-10/14 @ Dropoff

Back by popular demand, our Halloween Costume Drive will run from October 11th through 14th. Start pulling out costumes of yesteryear, or purchase new ones, to donate. Our neighboring elementary schools were so very grateful last year for the amazing options that came their way, and we're excited for our community to come together to deliver to them again this year.

We will be circulating a signup sheet next week for volunteers who can help supervise donations at drop-off.

See Halloween Drive Flyer for more details or email 41Cares@ps41.org with any questions or to join their distribution list.

Opportunity to Help PS51

PS51 is an amazing District 2 school who traditionally had a high number of students in temporary housing and/or for whom English is a new language. Along with other schools on the West side, they have recently enrolled many new families who have come to the US seeking asylum. PS51's Family Resource Room provides neighborhood families in need with clothing, household items, and more. Unfortunately, the Family Resource Room has a dwindling inventory due to the influx of so many new families in need.

If you would like to help replenish this incredible resource, you can purchase from the PS51 Amazon Wish List. When purchasing from this list, the address will come up as Denise Capasso, PS51 Counselor. There is tremendous need, and they are extremely grateful for any and all support that they receive.

(Please note that, as a PTA, we are bound by regulations that govern the way we can help families outside of our school; this opportunity was sent to us by our District 2 Superintendent and adheres to the proper guidelines.)

Family Giving

Thanks to those of you who have already donated. We're slowly climbing to our goal.  We're looking for everyone to participate at any level. Please take the time to Donate Online now.

Why does the PTA need to raise funds?

NYC’s DOE Budget does not cover 100% of the school’s operating budget. Through contributions from our families, the PTA raises and funds the portion of the budget that helps set our school apart from others. And we need your help, now more than ever, to ensure we rebuild the breadth of enrichment programs, activities, resources and equipment that creates for our kids the magical experience of our National Blue Ribbon Award winning school. For more information see our Family Giving Flyer.

Our total PTA budget of $552,000 is based on projected expenditures for the aggregate of our 500 students. Each year, our Family Giving Campaign strives to raise at least half of that amount through a direct campaign. Every dollar counts. Please Donate Online.

Look for Family Giving volunteers on Friday at drop off to answer any questions or email familygiving@ps41.org.

PS41's first Chess Tournament of the year is next week, Monday October 10th. The tournament will accommodate 130 players and is open to students from all schools. There are many non-rated and rated sections to choose from, including the special No Score section for Kindergartens only.
