SUBJECT: PS41 PTA Bulletin - The Night Before School

PS41 Families!

Tomorrow is the first day of school! We enjoyed seeing so many new students this morning at the 3K, PK and K Welcome Playdate.

It's hard to believe it's already September, but we were thinking ahead back in June and, as part of our kindness bulletin board series, we asked students to share advice to the children who would be entering their grade this fall.

Here is what they said:

  • 3K: "Be kind."
  • Pre-K: "Make good choices."
  • Kindergarten: "You have to pay attention to Heggerty."
  • 1stGrade: "Tell the truth."
  • 2ndGrade "Always listen and never give up."
  • 3rdGrade: "Learn new things and have fun."
  • 4thGrade: "Always try your best."
  • 5thGrade: "It's not that scary."

We know that for everyone the first day of school comes with mixed emotions - nerves and excitement and everything in between - but the kiddos (and their families alike) are in great hands here at PS41.

We wish everyone the best of the best for tomorrow, followed by a year filled with

     DREAMING,

          DETERMINATION and

               DISCOVERY!

Sincerely,

Sara Tranter & Melissa Valdes, PS41 PTA Co-Presidents (pta@ps41.org)

Get Involved

There are so many ways to Get Involved at PS41. Don't miss out on these upcoming opportunities:

Class Parents Needed

If you find yourself wondering how to get involved at PS41, we are here to tell you that being a class parent is one of the most rewarding experiences -- by liaising between the classroom families, teachers, and PTA, you help build and support our community. We work hard to make it straightforward and accessible for all who are interested. You can manage this job anytime and from anywhere!

While we typically receive an abundance of requests from those with younger children, please don't forget about your older ones -- this might be your last time to really connect with a teacher before your child heads off to Middle School (cue the tears)! The elementary years truly fly by, so the time is now to get engaged!

Complete the Class Parent Interest Form to volunteer. If you have any questions, feel free to contact classparents@ps41.org.

Family Giving

Why does the PTA need to raise funds?

More than 95% of the budget that PS41 receives from the Department of Education goes toward funding our talented and experienced teachers. Through contributions from our families, the PTA raises and funds the portion of the budget that helps set our school apart from others. And we need your help, now more than ever, to ensure we rebuild the breadth of enrichment programs, activities, resources and equipment that creates for our kids the magical experience of our National Blue Ribbon Award winning school. For more information see our flier.

Our total PTA budget of $552,000 is based on projected expenditures for each of our 500 students. Each year, Family Giving strives to raise at least half of that amount through a direct campaign. Every dollar counts. Please make a donation online.

Look for Family Giving volunteers next week at drop to answer any questions or email familygiving@ps41.org.

PTA Meeting -- 9/15 @ 9am

Join the PS41 community for our 1st PTA meeting of the school year on Tuesday, September 13 at 9am via zoom. The PTA is essential to our school's success and enhancing your child's education -- so come learn more about community engagement, fundraising, and how to get involved, as well as what we've accomplished, what's new and what's in the works, and share your voice.

Afterschool Fair -- Friday @ 8-8:45am

Afterschool programs are vital to student enrichment and for many families play an important role in child care. PS41 partners with 3 types of programs to make after school easier for families: (1) classes onsite at PS41; (2) pick up students after school and take them to the program location; (3) virtual program partners. Our after school partners will be in the PS41 cafeteria on Friday, September 9 starting at 8am to explain their programs an answer any questions that you might have.  Parents and students can walk around and meet with the 15 programs that interest them. The majority of programs offer financial assistance to those who qualify. You can reach out to the programs directly or to Thom Lee our Parent Coordinator for help navigating the process.

We are piloting 2 new onsite programs, Speech and Debate Club for 3-5th grade students and a violin program with Greenwich Music House open to beginners age 6-7.  We are welcoming back The Coding Space, an onsite provider pre-COVID, for our 1st-3rd graders. The McBurney YMCA, Chess, and Book Club round out the onsite program options this year. There is something for all ages.

Many of our program partners are already open for fall registration. Ready to sign up? No need to wait, programs are already open for registration, just reach out to partners directly. All info is on our website.

Check out the Afterschool Fair flier here. Thank you to Vernelle Murphy for organizing this event.

What's For Lunch?

Did you know that school lunch is free? The DOE provides hot and cold options for all students daily. If your child doesn't find something to eat on the daily menu, there are always alternate options, including peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwiches! Check out (and bookmark) the PreK-8 Express Hot Lunch menu, which is updated monthly on the DOE website. For ease, download the SchoolFood App on Android and iOS. Note that daily offerings at PS41 may differ slightly from the posted menu based on food deliveries from DOE.

Confirm your Contact Information

Make sure your information is updated in Membership Toolkit. Amongst other things, we use this platform to send reminders about upcoming events, announce volunteer opportunities, and generate class lists.
